Xanthelasma is a white or yellowish lesion that is present on the eyelids. Upper eyelids is more commonly involved than the lower eyelid. Though the lesions are asymptomatic and do not disturb the patient physically, but they can cause cosmetic disfigurement. They are caused by deposition of cholesterol under the skin. Your treating Dermatologist will ask you to get your lipid profile done so as to avoid reoccurrence of xanthelasma because of hyperlipidemia.

Treatment of xanthelasma : A variety of modalities are available to treat xanthelasma.

  • Trichloroacetic acid can be applied on the lesions.
  • CO2 laser – The lesions of xanthelasma can be very effectively treated by CO2 laser ablation.
  • Electrocautery and Surgical excision : Both are also effective in treating xanthelasma.
